Having an overly nasal voice can be quite embarrassing.
( See the How-Not-To video below)
I know because I had one. I didn’t realise it for a long time. People did say I had a good voice, so I believed them. But one day, when I listened back to a recording I made of one of my own songs in 1998, I could hardly believe how nasal my voice sounded.
It was cringeworthy. There were 20 women singing that song with me, but none of them told me how awfully nasal I sounded! I wish they had.
But then when I started my community music and holistic voice training in the year 2000, we had an individual vocal assessment at the start. And that’s when I discovered that the nasal quality was still there and still strong. I heard it from the mouth of an expert.
A nasal voice can be too penetrating, too grating, too narrow. Not everyone will agree, I know. Some people like it.
Some very famous singers have nasal voices, like Bob Dylan and Al Jolson. English folk singing has a strong element of nasality in it.
But for me, I really wanted to get away from it. I wanted to find a warmer, more open yet resonant tone.
Luckily I was able to do that through the holistic voice course I was on from 2000 - 2002. I learnt a massive amount about resonance - how to achieve all the different qualities and gain total control of tone. And I have more or less eliminated nasal tone now, from my singing.
The great thing is that you can choose exactly how much nasality you include in your voice. Like a cooking ingredient. A lot, a little, or none.
I know you may want to cut down on nasality if you feel you’ve got too much. Or just have more choice.
So I made this video for you. It shows the simple way I discovered to get control of nasal quality in your singing voice.
